Linux newgrp Command

Linux Command Manual

The Linux newgrp command is used to log into another group.

The newgrp command is similar to the login command, as it logs in again with the same account but under a different group name. To use the newgrp command to switch groups, you must be a user of that group; otherwise, you will not be able to log in to the specified group. A single user can belong to multiple groups by utilizing alternate user settings. If no group name is specified, the newgrp command will log in to the default group of the user.

Syntax

newgrp [group name]

Example

Change group

# newgrp root
