HTML Tag

Example

Browser Support

All major browsers support the tag.

Tag Definition and Usage

The tag defines a part of text in an alternate voice or mood and presents that part of the text in italic.

The tag is used to represent technical terms, idioms from other languages, thoughts, names of ships, and so on.

Use the element when no other semantic element is appropriate. Other semantic elements include:

- (emphasized text)

- (important text)

- (marked/highlighted text)

- (title of a work)

-<dfn> (a definition term)

Differences Between HTML 4.01 and HTML5

In HTML 4.01, the tag rendered italic text. However, in HTML5, there is no need to do this, as text formatting can be done using style sheets.

Global Attributes

The tag supports HTML's global attributes.

Event Attributes

The tag supports HTML's event attributes.
